Wind Energy Delivering for Communities

What are Community Benefit Funds?

Community Benefit Funds (CBFs) are now a feature of many renewable energy projects across Ireland. They ensure that communities closest to projects share in the benefits of clean electricity generation. These funds, supported by local wind and solar farms support local initiatives and provide direct benefits to nearby households, bringing long-term investment in the communities that host renewable energy developments.

From childcare facilities and sports clubs to community hubs, biodiversity projects and cultural events, CBFs support initiatives that make a meaningful difference in people’s everyday lives.

In 2024, Wind Energy Ireland members invested €6.7 million through CBFs supporting projects that strengthen communities and improve quality of life across Ireland. As more renewables are developed and connected to the electricity system, community benefit funding is expected to continue growing.

Why do we have Community Benefit Funds?

Under the Government's Renewable Electricity Support Scheme (RESS), new wind and solar farms make annual financial contributions to Community Benefit Funds. Most wind farms developed before the introduction of RESS, as well as projects developed outside of State support schemes, also provide community benefit funding to local communities.

Community Benefit Funds help ensure that the benefits of renewable energy are shared with the communities that host wind farms and other renewable energy projects, creating a lasting positive legacy alongside the generation of clean electricity.

Community case studies

Supporting rural schools in County Kerry

Funding from Statkraft’s Kilathmoy Wind Farm Community Benefit Fund helped Coars National School in County Kerry establish a dedicated school bus service.

The “Magic School Bus” initiative provides children in the local rural community with safe and reliable transport to and from school, helping families while delivering a tangible local benefit from the renewable energy project.

Investing in communities in County Wicklow

The Codling Wind Park project will deliver a multi-million-euro Community Benefit Fund to support projects and initiatives identified by communities across County Wicklow.

The fund will be independently administered and will provide opportunities for local organisations, sports clubs and community groups to invest in projects that create a lasting positive legacy. This includes support for organisations such as St Patrick’s GAA Club, which has already received sponsorship from Codling Wind Park to support football training.

Supporting education and community projects in County Offaly

BnM's Cloncreen and Mountlucas Wind Farm Community Benefit Fund is supporting a range of local initiatives in the communities surrounding the wind farm, from education and scholarships to sports and sustainability projects.

The fund has provided scholarships to local students, helping to ease the financial pressures of third-level education and giving recipients more time to focus on their studies.

It has also supported Clonbullogue National School, where funding was used to resurface the school’s basketball court, creating a safer space for children to play and take part in sport. Meanwhile, Clonbullogue GAA received funding to install solar panels at its clubhouse, helping to reduce energy costs as the club develops a new gym.

Transforming a community space in County Wexford

Funding from ESB’s Raheenleagh Wind Farm Community Benefit Fund helped the community of Ballyfad, Co. Wexford transform an old, storm-damaged schoolhouse into a modern community centre.

The original hall had fallen into poor condition and was no longer providing the warm, safe and accessible space the community needed. Support from the Community Benefit Fund helped make the replacement and renovation of the hall possible, creating a larger, brighter and more welcoming facility for local residents.

The new centre provides space for a wide range of community activities, including Irish Countrywomen’s Association (ICA) gatherings, yoga sessions and other local events, giving residents greater opportunities to connect, participate and enjoy activities within their own community.

Expanding childcare in County Monaghan

Energia Group's Drumlins Park Wind Farm awarded €30,000 to Newbliss Childcare Services, helping fund a long-awaited extension that will increase childcare capacity for local families and create a new room for toddlers.

Investing in traditional culture in County Mayo

Funding from NTR's Bunnyconnellan Wind Farm helped Bofield Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann host the Mayo Fleadh Cheoil 2025 in Ballina.

The week-long festival celebrated traditional Irish music, song and dance, bringing together performers, families and visitors from across the county while supporting one of Mayo's most important cultural events.
